Our quality inspection room sits between the finishing department and the stockroom — a deliberate position, because nothing leaves the production floor without passing through it. The room has four inspection stations: two lightboxes for pattern and colour work, a tension testing rig, and a flat measuring table for width and length verification. It is staffed by three inspectors across two shifts, and one of them, a woman we call Inspector Liang, has been doing this work for eleven years.

Inspector Liang does not say much during an inspection. This is not a personality trait — she is perfectly conversational at lunch — but a professional habit. When she holds a ribbon roll up to the lightbox, she is in a state of concentrated attention that she describes as "reading the ribbon," and interruptions cause her to restart. The production supervisors know this. New staff learn it quickly. The quality inspection room is one of the quieter places in our factory during working hours.

I spent an afternoon watching her work, with her permission, after she agreed to talk about what she is actually looking for and how she knows what she knows. This is what I took from that conversation.

The Lightbox and What It Shows

The lightbox inspection is the first pass for any patterned or colour-critical ribbon. Holding a woven ribbon against transmitted light reveals defects that are invisible in reflected light under normal factory conditions: broken warp threads that have been filled in by the weave structure and look correct on the surface, slight pattern registration drift that has accumulated over a long run, colour variation in a metallic thread that becomes obvious against the light but blends into the overall visual impression in normal viewing.

Inspector Liang's procedure for a new roll is consistent. She starts with the outer layer and works inward, unrolling slowly, looking for variation rather than defects. She is not looking for a single flaw — she is looking for a change in character, because a single flaw is usually random and tolerable within specification, while a change in character suggests something systematic: a thread tension that drifted, a dye lot boundary, a mechanical issue that appeared partway through the run and affected everything after it.

She told me she can usually tell within the first two metres whether a roll will pass. The first two metres set the standard — they are what the ribbon is supposed to look like. Everything after that is a comparison. If the comparison is stable across thirty metres, the roll passes. If she sees a point where the comparison breaks — where the ribbon after that point is subtly different from the ribbon before it — she notes the metre mark, unrolls to that section, and looks more carefully.

What Eleven Years Teaches

The question I asked Inspector Liang was a simple one: what do you know now that you did not know in your first year? She thought about it for a moment and said: "I know what each machine sounds like when it is making good ribbon versus when something is wrong. And I know which problems show up in the ribbon and which ones you can hear but do not show up."

The second part of that answer surprised me. She explained that some mechanical issues in the weaving process produce an audible change in the loom rhythm but do not produce a visible defect in the ribbon — the machine is working harder but the output is still within specification. Other issues produce no audible change but leave a trace in the ribbon that only shows up under the lightbox. She has learned, over eleven years, to correlate the two: when she sees a particular pattern of defect, she can usually tell the production team not just that there is a problem but where in the machine it is likely to originate.

This is not knowledge that is written down. It is not part of any training document. It lives in the conversation between Inspector Liang and the production supervisors, accumulated over hundreds of small incidents where she called something that turned out to be correct.

The Silence During Inspection

The professional silence I mentioned at the beginning is not just a personal preference. Inspector Liang explained it as a practical necessity: she is holding two things in her attention simultaneously — the visual image of the ribbon moving through her field of view and the memory of what the ribbon looked like two metres ago. An interruption does not just break her concentration; it erases the comparison. She has to go back to a point she remembers clearly and restart from there, which is why she marked the metre points on rolls she was uncertain about. The marks let her return to a known reference.

She also mentioned something I had not considered: inspection fatigue. After about ninety minutes of continuous lightbox work, her ability to detect subtle variation decreases measurably. She knows this about herself from experience, and she structures her shift to avoid long unbroken inspection runs — she moves between the lightbox stations and the flat measuring table, using the different tasks to rest the specific type of attention the lightbox requires. This self-management is entirely self-devised. It is not in any procedure. It works.

What the Silence Means for the Product

When a ribbon roll leaves Inspector Liang's station with a pass mark, it carries something that cannot be fully documented: eleven years of accumulated pattern recognition, a physical memory of what good ribbon looks like and feels like and where deviation appears, and a correlational model built from hundreds of specific incidents between what she sees in the ribbon and what is happening in the machine that made it.

We can write specifications. We can set tolerance ranges. We can maintain calibrated equipment and documented procedures. All of that matters. But the quality of the product that leaves our factory also depends on the kind of knowledge that Inspector Liang has, and that knowledge is hers — built over time, through attention and experience, and not transferable by document. We are aware of this. We consider it an asset, and we try to give her the conditions to use it well.
